Gay Marriage, Why the Fuss?I really don't understand why a few loud people are whipping themselves into a frenzy over gays getting married. Of all the things worth getting upset about like failing public schools, a flat jobs market, sky rocketing health care costs and our own government apparently smoking crack while pulling foreign policy out of its ass, gay marriage isn't exactly a barn burner issue.
So a bunch gays want to get married, exactly how is this any skin off the noses of the heterosexual majority? Heck, I thought marriage was supposed to be a good thing, promote the social good with stable communities or some such nonsense. Isn't that why the public hands out a tax break, to encourage marriage?
Let be honest about something, nobody except a masochist would choose to be gay. Nobody likes being a outcast and if your gay in America, your about as welcome as a pack of smokes in a cancer ward. Two guys kissing in public, no thank you. Given this reality you have to conclude that gays are simply stuck with how God made them.
Lets also admit we aren't losing much from the gene pool. Despite what you see on television, gays of either sex are no more the stunning examples of physical beauty than any of the straight set. Butt ugly people should not be encouraged to have children regardless of sexual orientation. With 280 million people already in this country we ought to be less worried about replacing ourselves anyway.
Its been said gay marriage will ruin the institution of marriage. I wonder how much the institution of marriage could be harmed considering a average divorce rate of fifty percent and the meaningful unions like those of Brittany Spears or Elizabeth Taylor.
Some have suggested that if we allow gays to marry, it will open the door to any sort of marriage. I'm pretty sure its illegal to marry your cousin, gay or straight. As to animals when you teach a sheep to drive down to city hall, write its name on a marriage permit, send out invitations and say, 'I do', get back to me because I don't see that happing anytime this eon.
On the other side of this coin gays ought to stop and realize that just because they got a slip of paper doesn't mean that the doors of the Pearly Gates will open and that's doubly true if the Pope has anything to do with it. The deal for gays is to get legal recognition and rights that the heterosexual married people have been getting. Getting hung up over the word marriage vs. civil union is like complaining about wining the lottery and getting paid in small bills. And a word of warning for gays, be careful what you ask for, you may eventually get it. Having been through a divorce I can tell you it's no fun on any level.
I have yet to hear a convincing argument why gay marriage is a bad deal, so I'm inclined to let them have it. The moral objections might make sense if we lived in a theocracy instead of a democracy, thank God we don't. My humble opinion is this is as Shakespeare put it "much ado about nothing". This issue affects less than 7% of the population. We don't need a amendment, we need to get our collective noses out of each others bedrooms hold our moral indignation for issues that matter more.
