A Homemade Intake:
10/16/2010
After a tremendous level of searching I'm left making my own intake tube. Given that I can't be the only person in this situation I thought I'd step the next poor soul through it. After a short trip to Menards I came home with a few parts and gathered my tools. The tube and collars are grey PVC electrical conduit. The tube is one inch, the collars just large enough to make 38MM on it's exterior size.

As the tube was too long, the first task is to shorten it.

Using the Dremel, sand the ridge to keep the air flow smooth.

Dear God I hate primer, and trust me, use lot's of old newspapers as this stuff will stain anything.

After the glue quickly add on your collars, smooth out any excessive glue and give it 10 minutes to setup.

Here is the intake tube mounted to a spare scooters carburetor.

Last but not least, a shot of paint and mounted on the bike. Not perfect, flashy or polished aluminum, but all for under 12 bucks.
The bad news, it still far outflows the standard air box which means I need to get my carburetor jetting sorted out. The 88 main jet is simply too much for 50CCs. I've ordered two main jets, a 78 and 85 and hope to see them quickly. However I'll remount my old air box in the morning and live with it for a few more days.
Stay tuned, help is on the way.
